A picture with no context is wallpaper. A list of links with no pictures is something you forget by lunch. MediaGallery.org exists because neither half works well alone.
The gallery is the part you look at. Photographs, video stills, posters, frames from film, scans from archives. It’s meant to be browsed slowly, the way you’d walk through a room with the lights on.
The digest is the part you read
Every image comes from somewhere. Someone shot it, someone published it, someone argued about it. The digest collects those stories and puts them next to the pictures they belong to. A photo of a crowd is nicer when you know which decade it’s from and why the photographer was standing on a roof.
We keep the rules simple. Pictures get a caption that says what you’re looking at. Stories get a short summary that says why you’d bother. Nothing is padded to fill space.

Expect photography, film, video, design and the business of media, all mixed together. Some posts will be practical, like how to check where a viral image came from. Others will just be worth a look.
